With Doom: The Dark Ages set to release in 2025 (along with other major titles), next year promises to be a strong one for video games (hopefully without layoffs included). We can expect what could surpass Doom Eternal as the best arcade shooter of all time, something that, in my opinion, Eternal is unbeatable at the moment. And that’s precisely what I can talk about, because while we wait for The Dark Ages, I decided to return to Doom Eternal to complete it on Nightmare difficulty. You may have heard of Doom Eternal's Ultra-Nightmare difficulty, where the challenge is that you cannot die—dying means starting your game from scratch. Extra lives don’t help in this mode as they are completely disabled. It's a challenge not everyone can overcome but many have attempted. I will try it, but not at the moment. In this case, the next available difficulty is plain Nightmare. Enemies behave with the same aggression as in Ultra-Nightmare, but you are allowed to die and retry as many times as you want. Extra lives are back, which can be obtained throughout the game and make things a bit easier. However, saying that playing on Nightmare is “easy” is… not accurate. The main mechanic in Doom Eternal to survive is constantly healing from the enemies you kill. In Nightmare, this is even more essential. This Nightmare playthrough took me a few months because I set the game aside halfway through to do other things. Broadly speaking, I played it in three parts: the first two where I was obtaining firearms, grenades, and other items, and the last part where the Doom Slayer gets his Crucible and faces the game’s final enemies. This is what I played more consistently and I'd say it cost me less as the game progressed, because as your arsenal of options increases, it becomes easier to handle large waves of enemies. Personally, I don't consider myself good with shooters, and my skill has rather deteriorated over time. So, starting this difficulty was quite hard, but halfway through I decided to play one of the game's DLCs, Ancient Gods Part II, which increases the base game’s difficulty and helped me understand mechanics I was still learning at that time. It's a game that requires constant movement, where movement can become more important than the correct use of weapons. Before shooting, it's important to ensure your survival and even have a minimal idea of where medkits and armor are in each area to go there in case of an emergency. But besides not really getting an idea of the levels, dying and repeating became a daily routine. Some sections were more difficult and others less so, but dying was undoubtedly a constant. Using the BFG and the Crucible are definitely two great aids, which in turn are very limited by their charges/ammunition. In this playthrough, unlike my previous one, I managed to unlock the Unmakyr, a weapon that uses the same ammo as the BFG and allows us to focus damage on a specific enemy. This is especially useful against tougher foes that needed to be eradicated as quickly as possible, like the Arch-Vile. In my first run, the Arch-Vile gave me a lot of trouble due to how quickly it summoned other demons, but it's really easy to defeat with one BFG shot or a few from the Unmakyr. And it's for reasons like this that, despite playing Doom Eternal on Nightmare being a challenge, it was also a testament to how much I had learned since my first run. While some things were much more difficult, others I learned to do in a much more optimal way. Although I still have a lot to learn if I plan to complete the game on Ultra Nightmare, I consider finishing it on Nightmare the first step to achieving this. Now, I will focus on finding the collectibles I missed and a few other things with the intention of having a 100% game, and then practice endlessly to master the Doom Slayer in his fullest glory. En este caso, la dificultad anterior disponible es Nightmare a secas, los enemigos se comportan con la misma agresividad que en Ultra-Nightmare pero te puedes permitir morir y reintentar las veces que quieras, además vuelven las vidas extra que se obtienen a lo largo de juego y facilitan un poco las cosas, aunque decir que en conjunto jugar en Nightmare es “fácil” pues… no lo es. La mecánica principal de Doom Eternal para sobrevivir es curarte constantemente de los enemigos que matas, en Nightmare esto es aun más esencial, debes tener un control adecuado de las armas y empezar a recurrir a mecánicas avanzadas para hacer un poco más amena la progresión. Esta partida en Nightmare me llevó algunos meses porque dejé el juego de lado a la mitad en pro de hacer otras cosas, pero a grandes rasgos podría decir que lo jugué en tres partes, las primeras dos donde estaba obteniendo las armas de fuego, granadas y demás, y la última parte donde el Doom Slayer obtiene su Crisol y se enfrenta a los últimos enemigos del juego, esto es lo que he jugado con más constancia y diría que comparativamente me ha costado menos a medida que el juego va avanzando, pues conforme tu arsenal de opciones aumenta es más fácil encargarte de oleadas grandes de enemigos. Personalmente no me considero buena con los shooters y mi habilidad más bien ha empeorado con el tiempo, por lo que empezar esta dificultad fue bastante difícil, pero a la mitad decidí jugar uno de los DLCs del juego, Ancient Gods Part II, el cual aumenta la dificultad del juego base y que me ayudó un poco a entender las mecánicas que todavía estaba aprendiendo hasta entonces, todavía me falta seguir profundizando en la mejor forma de utilizar las armas y todavía más importante, el movimiento. > El Marauder es mucho más lindo cuando no intenta matarte La primera vez que jugué Doom Eternal uno de mis mayores problemas era la movilidad, es un juego que te exige estar en constante movimiento y donde llegar a ser más importante el movimiento que el uso correcto de las armas, pues antes de disparar es importante asegurar tu supervivencia e incluso tener una mínima idea de dónde están los botiquines y armaduras en cada zona para ir allí en caso de emergencia, pero además de que realmente no me hice una idea de los niveles, morir y repetir se convirtió en el pan de cada día, algunas secciones costaban más y otras menos, pero sin duda morir era una constante. Definitivamente usar la BFG y el Crisol son dos grandes ayudas que a su vez están muy limitadas por sus cargas/munición, en esta partida a diferencia de mi partida anterior logré desbloquear además la Desmaykr un arma que usa la misma munición que la BFG y nos permite enfocar el daño en un enemigo concreto, especialmente útil contra los más duros y que necesitaba erradicar de la forma más rápida posible, como el Arch-Vile que en mi primera run me dio muchas dificultades por lo rápido que invocaba otros demonios, pero que realmente es muy fácil de vencer con un disparo de BFG o algunos de la Desmaykr. Y es por cosas como esta que a pesar de que jugar Doom Eternal en Nightmare es un reto, también fue una muestra de lo mucho que había aprendido desde mi primera run, y mientras algunas cosas eran mucho más difíciles, otras aprendí a hacerlas de una forma mucho más óptima, y si bien todavía debo aprender mucho si pienso en pasarme el juego en Ultra Nightmare, considero que terminarlo en Nightmare fue el primer paso para lograr esto, ahora me dedicaré a hallar los coleccionables que me faltaron y un par de cosas con la intención de tener una partida al 100%, y luego será practicar hasta el cansancio para dominar al Doom Slayer en su máximo esplendor.
