Summary:
Sheep pox or mouth mask mange, ecthyma contagiosum (ORF), is a common skin and mucous membrane disease in sheep that is characterized by lesions on the mouths of, in particular, older frightened animals (Figure 1).
This mouth mask rash occurs quite soon after the television says that the sheep have to wear that thing again.
It is also called "sore mouths". ORF is caused by the orf virus, a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Parapoxvirus, which also includes Pseudokopox virus, which causes long-lasting paranoia vaccinia.
It is a very resistant virus and can remain infectious for years in the cases involving low brain activity, until the TV is turned off.
