Above the clouds!

Autumn is known to be one of the best seasons for hiking. The temperatures are pleasant, the air quality is great and it is always sunnier on the mountains than in the valleys. This makes the so-called inversion possible, which means that the air differences are reversed compared to summer. The cold air collects in the flat regions like water in a bowl and often creates thick layers of high fog above it, which forms the transition to the warm air layer. As a result, it is often still really pleasantly warm and sunny up in the mountains in the fall, while you hardly get any sun or warmth in the lowlands.

I was able to enjoy this weather phenomenon impressively these days on a beautiful hike up the so-called Kasberg. The high fog was unusually high on this day. Only from 1,400 meters did you suddenly emerge from the fog into bright sunshine. Normally, the fog line is usually around 700-800 meters above sea level. From midday onwards, however, it cleared up very quickly in the mountains. The sun's rays had enough power to disperse the fog. This spectacle only lasted a few minutes and from the mountain top you could already see all the valleys that looked like a white sea. Only in the lowlands did the thick soup of fog remain. The sun had no chance of penetrating here on this day.

With an altitude of 1,747 meters, the Kasberg is a great mountain for a number of sports in summer and winter and a popular family excursion destination. Whether hiking, mountain biking or skiing and touring, here you have the opportunity to practice your favorite sport all year round.we undertook a hike from Steyerling via the Steyrerhütte to the Kasberg summit. A beautiful trail that took us past the rustic Steyrerhütte on the descent and allowed us to stop for a bite to eat. For refreshment, we had a hearty Cheesedumblingsoup in the truest sense of the word.
