Hello Hive community,

This is my first post on hive so please go easy on me :)

I'm Iranian and I currently live in Iran. I saw some great posts on Travelfeed so I decided to share some of the tourist attractions and beauties of Iran with you guys and gals.

English isn't my native language so please forgive me if i make a grammatical or other language related mistakes.

What is Rudkhan castle and where is it located?

Rudkhan castle was built during Sasanian era (224-651) to defend against Arab's invasion. It was later rebuilt in 1096 and was used by assassins (or Hashashin to be correct). It is located 25 KM southwest of Fuman city in Gilan province north of Iran.

Rudkhan castle consists of two main parts:

  1. Arg (Citadel), where the governor and his wives live
  2. Ghoorkhaane (Armory), where the soldiers live and train

Enough history class, let's get to the fun part

In order to reach the castle, you must climb 935 steps stretched from Rudkhan village to the castle itself, so make sure you bring some comfy shoes and clothing with you or you will get exhausted real quick.

There are many things to see in this wonderful place. The castle itself is a sight to behold, especially when the fog comes down and creates a mystical experience. Main gate looks pretty solid even after all these years and it's standing tall.

The jungle surrounding the castle is a beauty of its own with rivers flowing in it and tall trees. You can even sit in the pavilions by the river to enjoy the scenery.

There is a market in there as well and visitors can buy various local foods and snacks and souvenirs. Fortunately some of the old houses and buildings have survived the mountain's harsh conditions and they are a thing of beauty.

There are many peddlers and vendors along the way. Some sell hand crafted toys, dolls and souvenirs, others sell snacks. Sour snacks like fruit leather and plum are especially popular among the visitors. Homemade breads and pastry are common as well.

You can even rent local dresses and clothing to take some pictures in them.

If you plan on staying there more than a day, there are some residences as well and you can spend the night at their place and continue your adventure in the morning.

When to visit

It's best if you visit it in spring or summer. The weather would be great at these seasons with temperature averaging about 22 degrees Celsius. But beware Fuman city is very humid and prone to heavy rain, so tread carefully because there are many slippery surfaces.

It is not recommended to visit there in winter because of the harsh weather and blizzards which is a shame because the castle looks great with snow over it.

And be sure to go there in the morning or noon since there is a 6 hour walk from the bottom all the way to the castle. But the market looks phenomenon even at night.
