POWER AND LEGITIMACY

There's a difference between power and legitimacy, and unless you want to operate a tyranny, you'll always need legitimacy to effect true leadership.
Power can be stolen, snatched, or rigged into, but just like trust, legitimacy is given not taken or imposed.
You can subdue a person into submission, but you can't overpower a person into trusting you. They will fear you, respect you, resent you, but not trust you.
How then do you build a relationship without trust; how effective is a leader without a relationship?
Many years ago I learned the hard way that true leadership is not by authority, it's first by legitimacy.
Until people trust you well enough to GIFT you their goodwill to lead them, you're imposing yourself based on power and authority will only backfire.
.
Power can be taken, but trust is given.
Tyrants bank on power to create fear that subdues the people, while leaders bank on the legitimacy that inspires trust that makes the people submit willingly.
Well sha, these guys don't care about being trusted; you were never their interest in the first place.
They came for power, not the people. Now they have the power, the people can burn.
