Lo particular de la plaza Girardot de Maracay es que a su alrededor hay edificaciones que no debían estar en ese lugar, ya que históricamente se posicionaban en otras partes, me refiero al antiguo museo de antropología actualmente en estado de abandono y la catedral de Maracay, esta última siempre se construía al frente de las plazas Bolívar, además en otro de sus lados está la avenida Bolívar y al frente otra plaza; la plaza Bicentenaria.

The particularity of the Girardot square in Maracay is that around it there are buildings that should not be in that place, since historically they were positioned in other parts, I am referring to the old anthropology museum currently in a state of abandonment and the cathedral of Maracay, the latter was always built in front of the Bolivar squares, also on another of its sides is the Bolivar avenue and in front of another square; the Bicentenary square.

Arquitectura y diseño

Comenzaré describiendo el centro tan particular de la plaza Girardot la estatua que hace referencia a este prócer de la independencia Girardot, rodeado de una fuente de agua, es decir es una fuente con el piso a su alrededor de lajas de piedra, después en un círculo ovalado de piezas de porcelanato hicieron un muro de contención del agua que brota de la fuente, con cuatro puntos en las coordenadas y de mármol crudo. Y más en el centro hicieron con las mismas piezas de porcelanato la estructura de la fuente con sus caídas de agua.

Y en un círculo central está la estatua de Girardot con su uniforme militar, alzando una bandera con la mano derecha, para mí una señal de victoria. Lamentablemente, esta fuente está sin agua desde hace tiempo, supongo que por falta de mantenimiento, pero cuando la hicieron y estuvo en uso se veía hermoso y de noche, con las luces, resaltaba más.

Architecture and design

I will begin describing the very particular center of the Girardot square, the statue that makes reference to this hero of the Girardot independence, surrounded by a water fountain, that is to say it is a fountain with the floor around it made of stone slabs, then in an oval circle of porcelain pieces they made a retaining wall of the water that springs from the fountain, with four points in the coordinates and made of raw marble. And more in the center they made with the same porcelain pieces the structure of the fountain with its water falls.

And in a central circle is the statue of Girardot with his military uniform, raising a flag with his right hand, for me a sign of victory. Unfortunately, this fountain has been without water for some time, I suppose due to lack of maintenance, but when it was made and in use it looked beautiful and at night, with the lights, it stood out even more.

Adicionalmente, a la fuente central tiene otra estructura destacable, que parece ser una plaza dentro de la plaza mayor. Tiene 6 escaleras porque está montada en un nivel superior y tiene hasta faroles que la iluminan de noche.

En un obelisco de mármol de unos 6 metros de altura con un ave en su punta y no distingo de qué especie, no parece un águila, pero después de una investigación lo único que pude encontrar es que en ese obelisco hay un pedestal con un águila de bronce, si es un águila y fue un monumento para honrar a los estadounidenses que fueron ejecutados en la ciudad de Puerto Cabello por colaborar con el Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, en 1806.

In addition to the central fountain there is another remarkable structure, which seems to be a plaza within the main square. It has 6 stairs because it is mounted on a higher level and even has lanterns that illuminate it at night.

In a marble obelisk about 6 meters high with a bird on its tip and I do not distinguish what species, it does not look like an eagle, but after an investigation the only thing I could find is that in that obelisk there is a pedestal with a bronze eagle, if it is an eagle and was a monument to honor the Americans who were executed in the city of Puerto Cabello for collaborating with the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda, in 1806.

En su base hay una inscripción con varios nombres, pero no logró leer lo que dice. También parece ser una fuente, pero no estoy segura, ya que nunca la vi funcionando.

Esta plaza posee alrededor de la fuente central banderas de Venezuela, del estado Aragua y del municipio Girardot. Hace como 3 años un artista decidió realizar una obra con arena en la plaza y al frente de la catedral. Eran unos castillos que causaron sensación cuando estaban nuevos, a pesar de la erosion del viento, la lluvia y del paso del tiempo, todavía se puede apreciar algo de esta obra. La plaza Girardot es un espacio agradable para descansar.

Esta plaza ha sido restaurada muchas veces, recuerdo que hace años tenía dos baños públicos, uno para hombres y otro para mujeres, era un servicio gratuito para los transeúntes y en varias oportunidades me sacaron de apuros 🤭, los mantenían limpios y agradables, pero de la noche a la mañana los clausuraron. Como está ubicada en pleno centro de la capital del estado, siempre está llena de personas, por todo el comercio, bancos y centros religiosos que la rodean.

Tiene grandes y frondosos árboles que dan sombra a jóvenes y ancianos a cualquier hora, y siempre está llena de muchas personas.

Personal anecdote

This square has been restored many times, I remember years ago it had two public restrooms, one for men and one for women, it was a free service for passersby and on several occasions they got me out of trouble 🤭, they kept them clean and nice, but overnight they were closed. As it is located right in the center of the state capital, it is always full of people, because of all the commerce, banks and religious centers that surround it.

It has large, leafy trees that give shade to young and old at any time, and it is always full of people.

Recuerdo que hace años me paso algo curioso en esta plaza, yo salía al medio día de mi trabajo y tenía que esperar 4 horas para ir a la universidad así que me sentaba a estudiar, leer, y a veces a jugar con mi cubo de Rubik, tenía una adicción a ese juguete y en una tarde una mujer se me sentó al lado y me dijo que si se lo podía prestar, yo se lo di y en el primer intento lo armo, me dejó sorprendida y me dijo que eso tenía un truco luego se marchó y como a los 5 minutos se sentó otra persona a mi lado, esta vez era un hombre que también me lo pidió prestado, yo todavía no salía del asombro que me dejó la mujer cuando este chico me lo entregó resuelto nuevamente. 😆😅, ¿qué probabilidad hay de que suceda eso en un millón? Ninguno nos conocíamos y cada quien siguió su camino, pero ese momento y el lugar quedaron en mi memoria para siempre.

None of us knew each other and everyone went their own way, but that moment and the place stayed in my memory forever.
