There are already multiple reviews online from screens that recently took place, from the description of some of this reviews I have to say that for 2024 my theory about horror movies has been confirm, directors seem to have scratch out the jump scare scenes, full on gore and went with something more suttle, after all with this style they can have a larger reach and put more eye balls in front of the screen, number go up. Longlegs (2024) has generated significant skepticism among critics and audiences alike. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film stars Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, and Blair Underwood, the story follows FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) as she investigates a series of occult-related murders committed by the elusive serial killer known as Longlegs (Nicolas Cage). The case takes a personal turn when Harker discovers a connection between herself and the killer, forcing her to delve deeper into the dark world of the occult to prevent further tragedy.

There has been a lot of hype around this movie making critics and audience skeptic of what they could get out of it, to a certain degree I find the marketing strategy void since there is not much context although keeping the mystery is part of it. For example they never really show Nicolas Cage going at it, they did show some of his work, his victims. Not showing on screen the serial killer keeps the audience in suspense.

A visual and mood aspect has been pointed out as the factors that have made the film seem rather creepy, it has also been pointed out that the film’s themes of occult has also played a part in the movie as well as the attempt to discover the supernatural. Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Longlegs is incredibly erratic and menacing, which is one of the film’s strong points, while Maika Monroe, who plays Agent Harker, is fragile yet willful.

Plot

There is nothing complicated about this plot is very simple and straight forward, FIB Agent Lee Harker is tracking down a serial killer, at first the victims doesn't seem connected but latter on Longlegs became a reality. The case rise up into a personal level when Harker finds that she has a connection with the killer, which increase her desire to get to the bottom and investigate further even though her judgement might get compromise, this situation even goes into a mystical realm of putting are risk more than just her life. This movie been as good as some critics describe could easily take a space on my movie collection for a very special reason, the irony that I became a Nicolas Cage fan when I watch for the first time 8MM when he was a private investigator similarly hunting down a killer, now he is the killer been hunted.

Cast and Crew

The film features the cast of Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, and Blair Underwood, while been directed by Osgood Perkins who also directed The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) and Nope (2022) and features Nicolas Cage as a producer along with Dave Caplan, Chris Ferguson, Dan Kagan, and Brian Kavanaugh Jones as the producers of the film. It was made for Nicolas Cage’s company called Saturn Films and the movie cast is also quite impressive, I find that there is not much to say about the cast been it so known, I'm definitely bias been a Nicolas Cage fan but since the moment I saw the teaser thought this was going to be a hit.

Critical Response

It has been well praised by critics, the site Rotten Tomatoes for example has a 100% based on 11 reviews with a rating of 8. 8/10 on IMDB, so far there are not that many votes but Youtube is flooded with positive reviews about this movie. The most common commentary I have notice is that they had no clue of this movie existence, making it even more special like stumbling into a gem inside the cinema while watching something else, extra bonus on a movie night.

The movie has been describe as a pure horror movie that fucks with the audience mind without actually scaring them to death, it has a deeper psychological effect, slowly keeping the suspense similar to what The First Omen (2024) did and turn out a great strategy even though the title of the movie scream supernatural, possession and evil.

Themes

The picture is a mystery and horror film dealing with the subjects of evil, the supernatural and the occult, which provokes thoughts on the essence of evil and whether it is possible to understand it. One of the things that gives the film credibility is the incorporation of some real life events like the Zodiac Killer and Charles Manson, which makes it a real life movie and very creepy.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm very excited since horror is probably my favorite genre, love been scare during the entire movie but at times it becomes tiring. This type of horror movies I enjoy more, no that is something new because as everything in life everything comes around. At some point in time I'm sure this was a style of horror movie apply by other directors in the past. I'm very intrigue how much this movie goes into the supernatural or is it just Nicolas Cage character practicing some kind of black magic.
