For this week's #wednesdaywalk, I took a stroll through one of the older cemeteries in the area...a cemetery named Campbell Cemetery.

Established in the mid 19th century, this cemetery's history is quite fascinating. How so? A quick search on Newspapers.com yielded some interesting tidbits of history :

  • Two veterans of the War of 1812 were interned here
  • The majority of records and wood markers were destroyed in grass fire in the early 20th century
  • Grave robbers stole a freshly buried corpse in 1932 from this area

The history here, when walking around it, feels rich. Not only is there no real sense of who was buried here, but the mixture of grave robberies and ancient wars of the United State bring an astute sensibility to the cemetery. If that's not all, there is also this:

The Battle of Vicksburg was a key Union victory near the end of the US Civil War; it ultimately secured the Mississippi River to the Union cause near the end of the war. This "canon," for whatever reason, ended up here, at this cemetery. My guess is that one of those buried and lost to time below the Earth was likely an important figure in US military history.

As always, there were a few interesting headstones I noted and photographed along the way. Old, but always interesting!

Lots of history for a little, small plot on the Northside of a Driftless Wisconsin town! It really is amazing how much history lies in this area, and going forward with the #wednesdaywalk, I really want to begin to focus more on history stories. I love history, I like taking photos, and above all, I'm thinking it would be more interesting of a share on Wednesday Life permitting, I'll be able to follow through!

Thanks for stopping by to take a look at my #wednesdaywalk. As always, I hope everyone else out there had a wonderful Wednesday too. With some luck, another historical share will manifest next week, this time.
