Ever since my daughters watched the popular South Korean series; Squid Game, they has been asking me to make or bought them Dalgona Candy. I did Google the ingredients and steps on how to make Dalgona Candy, but I felt it is to much hassle to make one.
The ingredients and tools required are in below list:
- Sugar
- Baking Soda
- Ladle
- Spoon or other utensil to stir the sugar
- Baking paper
- Cookie cutter with the desired shapes
Dalgona or ppopgi is a Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda. It was a popular street snack in the 1970s and 1980s, and is still eaten as a retro food: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalgona
Just my luck, when I and my family went to Paradigm Mall last weekend, we saw a small booth selling a piece of Dalgona Candy for RM10 (USD2.40). Honestly, the price is quite expensive for a candy made from sugar and baking soda. But I still bought the candy for them because I was thinking of the time I can save from making one 😋
The rule to play Dalgona Candy challenge is really easy and straightforward. Players need to carve out the shape on top of the candy. Typically the shape available such as a circle, triangle or umbrella. Players are can use tools such as needle to carve out the shape.
My eldest daughter choose a Dalgona Candy with triangle shape, and my youngest daughter choose one with star shape. They can't wait for us to reach home.
Once we reach home, I ask them to carve out the shape on top of a plate. This is to ensure the candy crumbs are not fallen onto the carpet. It would be hard to remove the candy crumbs from a carpet.
My eldest daughter able to carved out the triangle shape from the Dalgona Candy. While my youngest daughter break her candy 😅.
The game might look simple, but the candy texture that is thin and fragile made it challenging. One wrong step or pressing too hard, the candy will break.
As for taste, the candy taste really sweet. Too sweet actually, and the candy has a burned taste and smell to it. Not sure whether that is normal or not. Because that is my first time seeing Dalgona Candy.
I did enjoy seeing my daughters trying their best to carve out the shape out of the Dalgona Candy 😁.
