Turquoise Tranquility: Discovering Lake Lungern, Switzerland

During my trip to Switzerland, I admired one of the locations called Lake Lungern the most. Tucked within the embrace of the Swiss Alps, Lake Lungern is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland in my opinion. The surrounding feels like a dreamland, too perfect. Rich green hills cradled turquoise water that reflects the surrounding peaks of the Swiss Alps with virtually unreal clarity. The photos I am going to share here will give you a clear idea of the location.
Lake, Lungern
Lake Lungern, also known as Lungerersee, is an exquisite highland natural lake formed in the Obwalden region of Switzerland. The lake got its name from Lungern Town, located at the shore of the lake. It sits at an elevation of 750 meters (2,460 feet). Lake Lungern was formed by the action of glaciers, the basin having been excavated during the last ice age. A lower level was intentionally engineered in the 19th century to prevent flooding, allowing more land for settlement. A history of geological events is available within the enclosing clifftops and nearby mountain slopes. src
Our hotel was in Malters, a municipality of Lucerne City, Switzerland. So, on our way to Grindelwald, our first short stoppage was Lake Lungern. Later we decided that after visiting Grindelwald, we would come back here to swim and have a small picnic moment. From Malters to Lake Lungern, it only took 47 minutes to drive. I had no idea what we were going to see until I reached our destination.
We stopped at a spot called Kaiserstuhl which is a tourist attraction spot of the lake. Here, the first thing I saw was a large wooden deck from where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the lake. So, without any thought, I went there to stand on the deck and found some fishermen also who were trying to catch fish. Well, I must admit that the fishermen or those who were just trying to catch fish lazily from the lake were not very happy to see us. They felt disturbed and clearly gave me a look of disgust because I guess I destroyed their solitude moment.
This spot is also the fishing spot of the lake. I have seen a local fishing store nearby.
I spend some time sitting on the deck to enjoy the exquisite view of the lake. It was a bright summer day so the water was crystal clear, a beautiful turquoise color with a reflection of the surrounding mountains. The lake felt like a mirror that was giving me a reflection of my inner self. Yes, I saw my reflection too for testing. The deep blues gave hints about the depth of the lake, telling of its origins and the movements that shaped it. The surrounding cliffs showed layers of rock, with each one telling its story of time and transformation. The astonishing part for me was to witness the playful moment of light and shade on the mountains. It was a scenic moment as well as an unforgettable time.
Few wooden chalets and farmhouses didn't avoid my eyes. After visiting the deck area, I took a short walk to the nearby area. There was nothing much except some wooden chalets and vast green, lush meadows. I was expecting some cows with bells honestly but they were quite far away; enjoying their morning meals.
We knew that we were going to come back again to spend time near the lake so without any further delay we directly went to Griderwald. We spent the entire morning at Grindelwald and then we returned again to Lake Lungern before going to another destination. Also, our group wanted to rest near the lake and wanted to swim in the lake. This time our destination was called Inseli Lungern, near the lake. It is also a tourist attraction area where you can swim, go kayaking, have a BBQ, or spend lazy time while enjoying the beautiful view of the lake. Here there is a specific area for BBQ, I will share the photo.
On the map, Inseli Lungern spot looks like an island connected to the lakeside area. It's a small peninsula extending into the tranquil waters of Lake Lungern. This spot actually gives tourists an opportunity to enjoy the lake view more closely and to swim in the crystal clear water. The area is big, green, and filled with trees. There was a large village nearby this spot. So locals come here to swim in the lake.
After arrival, the first thing I noticed was the calmness. Upon arrival, this small spot offered me a beautiful panoramic view of the lake along with the beautiful perspective of the nearby Lungern villages and pine forests.
The atmosphere and panoramic view of the lake looked completely different in the morning time and the afternoon time. What I liked about this spot was that there were areas from where I was able to enjoy the scenic view without any disturbance. Some Instagrammers came to take some photos and left but still, the spot was not crowded at all. This was one of the spots where I was able to relax and reflect on my life. I was having so many issues mentally back then so even though I was on a trip, I was stressed. So, spending time near the lake with such an amazing view was a great choice.
I obviously like tourist spots or to see different locations but sometimes I seek relaxing moments to calm down during travel. I can't even remember for how long I sat near the lake. I sat there and watched what was offered in front of my eyes. There are actually no words to explain that moment.
Small picnic moments, some snacks, and sitting lazily while enjoying the beautiful view of the lake and Swiss Alps; that was all I needed after a hectic morning at that point. Like I mentioned I was dealing with a lot mentally and after what happened in my life, I was never able to rest and relax properly. I won't say everything was fixed after visiting the lake but it helped me to calm my nerves. It was so surreal to see the different moments and colors of the lake. Afternoon time, the sun was bright so the surface of the lake was sparkly and shiny. Some people were already enjoying their swim in the lake. Some were enjoying their moment on the boat. One of the ladies was kayaking with her dog. And I was the one who sat near the lake and was looking at other people's activities.
It's a spot to slow down and connect to nature. I also was carried by how the Swiss have aptly preserved such places far more pure than we are used to, while they maintained access to others. Simplicity remained everywhere in this area.
Inseli Lungern is a place not to visit, but to halt, breathe deeply, and bathe in tranquility as Lake Lungern graces it. This slice of Swiss serenity serves as a spot for a picnic, reading a book or just simply gazing at the lake for people like us.
We wanted to spend more time here but we had to rush to leave the spot because of the rain suddenly. So, I witnessed the atmosphere of the lake both on bright sunny days and rainy days. But in my opinion, rainy moment looked more beautiful here, everything looked fresh and I was able to inhale the earthy smell of nature. It was nice...
