Black Radish & Honey Homemade Syrup for Cough

Hello guys!
These days there are so many ill people around us! Everyone is coughing, everyone has fever🤒, everyone has something. It's not safer anymore to take children to playground, unless you want your kid to bring home a virus. I really mean it! That's how things are here, at the moment.
My 5 yrs old started to cough a week ago. He doesn't have any other kind of symptom, although his father has had a bad cold recently and I honestly expected Caleb to get the virus too. But it didn't happen, fortunately.
Instead he started coughing. He coughs badly every time he wakes up and has 1-2-3 episodes a day in which he coughs a little. No fever, no nothing. He's as energetic as he normally is, so I'm not worried about him catching a cold yet.
However, to keep this cough under control, there are two natural remedies that I use in this case:
black radish syrup
onion tea
Black Radish is well known for its multiple health benefits, like boosting the immune system, detoxification properties, supporting liver and digestive functions.
Something I came across very often is that Black radish promotes bile production.
But there's this thing not everyone knows about Black Radishes: they are such wonderful natural remedies for coughing!
YES! They are! The best!
Before I go forward with this easy Honey and Black Radish Syrup, here I leave you a few benefits and compounds found in black radish.
The black radish is a plant of the Brassicaceae family. Its root is used in phytotherapy, but also in various recipes. Black radish has many health benefits, so much so that it was used as a currency in ancient Egypt. Its fame has even led to its representation among the hieroglyphs of the temple of Karnak.
The black radish root is composed of flavonoids, but also of many vitamins, including vitamin A, group B vitamins, including B9, and vitamin C. This root also contains minerals and trace elements (iodine, magnesium, sulphur, zinc, calcium).
Black radish has a detoxifying action on the liver, helping to eliminate xenobiotics from the diet. In addition, this root favors the secretion of bile by the liver (choleretic action) and provokes the emptying of the gall bladder (cholagogue action).
In addition, black radish has digestive virtues and contributes to the proper functioning of the metabolism. It is lipid-lowering, i.e. it contributes to the reduction of cholesterol, and has a gastroprotective effect by stimulating the secretion of mucus. In addition, black radish liquefies mucus and has an expectorant and antitussive activity. It is also anti-infectious (with activity on Helicobacter pylori), antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
The black radish root is listed in the French Pharmacopoeia.

I agree with everything that is said on this website because I also have a few books where I have found the same information. But it's a lot more easier to bookmark this here than write these myself right?
The use of black radish in naturopathy has scientific support for use on digestive disorders and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. In addition, the black radish has a tradition in folk medicine for coughs (also whooping cough), liver ailments, rheumatism, and gout. Though common in traditional folk healing, treatment of these conditions has not yet been supported by rigorous scientific inquiry.

This root veggie has anti-congestive properties, which help clear the mucus from your throat and respiratory tract. (source here)
“This is an ancient method used to relieve cough and phlegm. Pungent and warming foods like radish and honey help promote the dispersing of coldness, reduce secretion, and relieve coughing,” Dr Choi captioned her post. (source here)
This natural remedy here in Romania is used since always. I had to drink this syrup when I was a child and every family does it. Well, only the ones who support and trust natural remedies and who don't jump quickly to administer conventional medicines and anti-inflammatories.
The Radish and Honey Syrup can be made two ways.
I like the first one because is the easiest!
For both ways, you'll only need Black Radish and Honey. Ofc there are some other versions, with more addings like ginger, horseradish, cloves, garlic, etc.
First Method: using a Whole Radish
You need one Black Radish and one Tbsp of honey.
To make syrup, you need only one black radish, about 300-400 grams, and good quality honey. If you don't have honey or your child is allergic to honey or is under 2 years old, you can use sugar. But with honey, the efficiency of the syrup is greater.
Wash the radish well, then dry it. If it doesn't sit straight when you place it on the table, you can cut the bottom so it sits straight or put it in a glass. Cut off the top, like a lid, and set it aside, you'll need it later. Scoop out the inside of the radish with a knife, leaving the walls 2 cm thick.
Put two tablespoons of honey so that it fills more than half of the hole. If you go for the version with sugar, put four spoons of sugar. Close the radish with the upper part cut off earlier (the lid) and let it sit overnight. In the morning, inside the radish you will find a sweet and tasty syrup, which the little ones will love.
Give the syrup to your child a few times a day, one tbsp at a time.
We have a lot of Romanian websites to describe the procedure, is so popular here.
In the last photo below: this is how it looked after some time sitting on the kitchen counter.
2nd Method: using shredded Black Radish
Second method is not as perfect for little kids as the first one because it's much stronger in taste. I think this works better for older kids or adults.
Because I had the remaining pulp from the radishes, I grated it and put it in a jar on top of which I added enough honey to cover it. I left it as long as I could, a good few hours or overnight and then I strained it.
This syrup is so strong that even I had a hard time drinking it. But it's worth all the effort!
So my darlings and all mammas out there, this is what I do when Caleb is coughing, besides the Onion Tea. Btw, this is another BEST OF THE BEST remedies out there for coughing.
I think these two are the most relevant from all remedies I've tried and it's always my go to Natural Remedies.
I hope this recipe of Black Radish and Honey Syrup will be useful for you too one day, in case you'll need it!
Take care,
missdeli 💓
