My Actifit Report Card: January 13 2025 - Carnaval, Crime and Catharsis
5 comments
Monday, my day off.
And I desperately needed it to recover from the weekend.
The carnival season officially kicked off in my village this weekend.
The announcement of the youth prince and princess, tasked with inspiring young people to join the festivities, was a highlight.
They looked fantastic, as always.
Our "Bacchus," representing the 18-year-olds, also exudes energy and a commitment to this tradition.
On this tradition, though, I have conflicting emotions.
Roman mythology regards Bacchus as a patron of wine and drunkenness.
In the Netherlands, alcohol is legal at eighteen; this custom sometimes results in young people drinking excessively during carnivals.
This is something I strongly discourage for my own children.
Thankfully, my 17-year-old son has no intention of joining the Bacchus club when he turns 18.
On Sunday, I filed a police report after an unknown individual attempted to enter my home and several others.
He prowled about, tried to unlock doors, and even looked at cars.
The cops first dismissed it, writing off his conduct as bewilderment and too much alcohol intake.
But this justification did not satisfy either my neighbors nor me.
Unless they are very drunk, who goes about in shorts and flip-flops in -7°C weather?
Today the cops sent me more specifics.
After visiting my house, this individual actually created more disruptions involving a car accident.
He was severely intoxicated by alcohol and drugs, and he was later jailed.
I also spoke with the local police officer about the rising issue of drug and alcohol-related disruptions in our community.
He promised increased surveillance, but without the commission of actual crimes, the police's options are limited.
Many of my neighbors are now installing security cameras, and one of my neighbours cameras captured the attempted burglary in crystal-clear detail.
This certainly provides a sense of security.
Later, I channeled my frustration, anger, and powerlessness into a boxing lesson.
Let me give you a quick tour of my boxing area.
Luckily for me, due to a norovirus outbreak, only two other women were in class, allowing for focused attention on technique.
I gave it my all and was completely exhausted but incredibly satisfied when I returned home.
After a refreshing shower, I slipped into bed.
Goodnight, and sweet dreams to all!
Wishing you all the best in life and much health.
