Here we go again: They are billions addiction

So I managed to get back my steam account and play some of those games I had in my library.
There is one game that no matter how long I don't play it, I always go back to it like that familiar book on your shelf that just comforts you.
I booted up They are Billions and that familiar steampunk look of gears and steam came into view.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the surviving humans retreated to the Great Crater and you are tasked as its newest general to recapture the surrounding area for the expansion of and glory of mankind.
Playing a custom game you placed smack into the center of the map and the first order of business is to scout with the handful of rangers you are given. You also start off with a few tents to increase the number of available workers and gold.
Then creating a sawmill and a food supply either a hunter's lodge or fishing outpost if there is a body of water.
Then you continue to scout and kill off the zombies as you build up your population, technology, and military power.
By the 2nd week, you would have encountered your first wave which is pretty easy to deal with a few rangers picking them off.
Having fought off that you start looking for choke points to build your gates and walls. You want to be able to provide them with a narrow full to increase your effectiveness in creating a defensive kill zone.
Making use of stone cliffs and trees is a good way of being able to focus your defensive structures.
Often a problem at this point is either overextending your base or not expanding fast enough as you attempt to turtle up.
You need the space but you also need to be able to defend it because all it takes is just one zombie to start attacking a structure and get your workers infected.
There are been a lot of times that I am busy scouting and extending a particular side only to be alerted of a lone zombie attacking your base and it just quickly spirals out of control as each infected structure would generate a zombie who is hell-bent on destroying your command center.
Then you get your next wave hopefully with your walls and towers in place.
The final wave at around day 80-106 (depends on your difficulty) is brutal as the screen is flooded red with all the infected running towards you.
I usually would have at least two to three lines of defense as it pits all types of zombies from your common zombies to runners. Then you also get Tanks who are these behemoths that have low attack but can take a huge amount of punishment.
Then you get spitters that well spit out a corrosive acid and harpies who can are fast as well as can freaking jump over walls.
Those walls that you were so proud of and thought would be enough is quikly destroyed by these hordes and would be a good thing to start retreating to your 2nd wall defense.
Often times if you are prepared enough you would be able to repel them at this point. If not well you need to be able to take your last stand and hopefully have enough defensive structures near your command center.
If not well it's game over.
If you particularly like the defensive gameplay of Terrans in Starcraft you will definitely enjoy this old game.
Get it from Steam or buy the game through other platforms.
