In 1535, King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church in England, marking the beginning of the Anglican Church. In 1759, the British Museum opened its doors to the public, allowing them to explore and learn from the many artifacts and artworks housed there. In 1865, Fort Fisher in North Carolina fell to the Union, cutting off the last major seaport of the Confederacy, effectively ending the Civil War. In 1870, a political cartoon for the first time symbolically represented the Democratic Party with a donkey. In 1919, a devastating tragedy occurred in Boston, Massachusetts when a storage tank burst, flooding the streets with two million gallons of molasses and killing 21 people and injuring 150.
