I think that finishing learning the English language has always been my pending task: as they say, this language known as the universal will always be useful and I would like to have it among my knowledge. Personally, I think I can understand it well if I read it, but my confidence fails a little when it comes to the writing or the conversations. This was always among my "one day I will do it", until I arrived at this hostel and I had to face all my ignorance and start rushing things 😅.

Creo que terminar de aprender el idioma inglés siempre fue mi tarea pendiente: como dicen, este idioma conocido como el universal siempre va a ser útil y me gustaría tenerlo entre mis conocimientos. En lo personal creo que puedo entenderlo bien si lo leo, pero mi seguridad falla un poco cuando se trata de las redacciones o de las conversaciones. Esto siempre estuvo entre mis "algún día lo haré", hasta que llegué a este hostel y me tuve que enfrentar a todo mi desconocimiento y empezar a apurar las cosas 😅.

A few days ago I arrived on the trip I am currently on with the modality of work exchange for accommodation in a hostel. While I was at home I thought that the tasks they were going to assign me would be simple, like cleaning or receiving guests, so that didn't worry me too much. Many things went through my mind before coming, but when I finally made it happen, everything ended up being better than planned. The hostel is a very nice and quiet space, and I already had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people 😃.

Hace unos días llegué al viaje en el que me encuentro actualmente con la modalidad de intercambio de trabajo por alojamiento en un hostel. Mientras estaba en mi casa pensaba en que las tareas que me iban a asignar serían sencillas, como limpieza o recepción de huéspedes, así que eso no me preocupó demasiado. Muchas cosas pasaron por mi mente antes de venir, pero cuando finalmente lo concreté, todo terminó siendo mejor que lo planeado. El hostel es un espacio muy lindo y tranquilo, y ya tuve la oportunidad de conocer un montón de gente genial 😃.

I am having a few very calm days between walks to explore the city of San Juan in Argentina and the afternoons when I have to work. For now, I managed to learn a lot of things about hospitality, business management and the culture of this new province for me. Although my main idea was to be able to travel, I got one of the most enriching experiences for me. It is also my first trip alone, so I was able to discover how I handle myself in these situations where I have to make all the important decisions 😃.

Estoy teniendo unos días muy tranquilos entre paseos para recorrer la ciudad de San Juan en Argentina y las tardes en las que me toca trabajar. Por ahora, logré aprender un montón de cosas sobre hotelería, administración de negocios y la cultura de esta provincia nueva para mí. Si bien mi idea principal era poder estar de viaje, me llevo una de las experiencias más enrriquecedoras para mí. También es mi primer viaje sola, así que pude descubrir cómo me manejo en estas situaciones en donde me toca tomar todas las decisiones importantes 😃.

But of everything I've had to do so far, the most challenging thing for me was welcoming English-speaking guests. I assumed that at some point a foreign guest might arrive, but in my first week of work we had three people who only spoke English and almost no Spanish. You could say that this forced me to start practicing conversation in English and also learn many key things about travel vocabulary. Giving directions about excursions, guiding them around the city and other suggestions were some of the things I had to learn to do. And it was quite entertaining, because I think I function better under pressure and I learned quickly 🙂.

Pero de todo lo que tuve que hacer hasta ahora, lo más desafiante para mí fue recepcionar huéspedes que hablaban en inglés. Yo suponía que en algún momento podía llegar algún huésped extranjero, pero en mi primer semana de trabajo tuvimos tres personas que solo hablaban en inglés y casi nada de español. Podría decirse que esto me obligó a empezar a practicar conversación en inglés y además, aprender muchas cosas claves del vocabulario de viajes. Dar indicaciones sobre excursiones, guiarlos en la ciudad y demás sugerencias fueron algunas de las cosas que tuve que aprender a hacer. Y fue bastante entretenido, porque pienso que funciono mejor bajo presión y aprendí rápido 🙂.

Just before coming I had gone with some friends to a bar to talk to people in English, but on that occasion I was too shy to do it. Now, speaking in English was something I needed to do so I had no choice but to practice and practice. In my free time from work I take the opportunity to take a lot of notes and learn words, which later help me communicate better. I still think my pronunciation is horrible, but at least I was able to make the guests understand me and also understand what they want to tell me 😃.

Justo antes de venir había ido con unos amigos de un bar para hablar con personas en inglés, pero en esa oportunidad estuve muy tímida como para hacerlo. Ahora, hablar en inglés era algo que necesitaba hacer así que no me quedó otra opción que practicar y practicar. En mis tiempos libres de trabajo aprovecho para tomar muchas notas y aprender palabras, que luego me sirven para poder comunicarme mejor. Todavía sigo pensando en que mi pronunciación es horrible, pero al menos pude hacer que los huéspedes me entiendan y también yo entender lo que ellos quieren decirme 😃.

My coworkers at the hostel told me that the best way to learn is to dare to talk without fear of failing. That's why when I had a little more confidence, I took the opportunity to chat and ask more questions from the guests. This way I managed to refine my understanding a little more and also generate a little more confidence when speaking. I think this is very productive and will help me improve my skills: at first I was embarrassed to receive guests who speak English, but now they have become my favorites 😃.

Mis compañeros de trabajo del hostel me dijeron que la mejor manera de aprender es animarse a conversar sin miedo a fallar. Es por eso que cuando tuve un poco más de confianza, aprovechaba para sacar charla y preguntar más cosas a los huéspedes. Así logré afinar un poco más mi comprensión y también generar un poco más de seguridad a la hora de hablar. Pienso que esto es muy productivo y que me va a servir para mejorar mis habilidades: al principio tenía vergüenza de recepcionar a huéspedes que hablan en inglés, pero ahora se volvieron mis favoritos 😃.
