I wanted to make a special post for my #500th pin on the Worldmappin map, but I didn't remember in time and I missed it just yesterday. But highlighting pin #501 isn't bad either because it's still an interesting number, what do you think? Thinking about all the nice places I've been to have this amount of pins on my map makes me feel really good. And of course, this pin is another great place I want to share with you. It is the Martial Glacier in Ushuaia, a name a bit misleading for tourists but well appreciated by any mountain lover 😃.
Quería hacer un post especial por mi pin #500 en el mapa de Worldmappin, pero no me acordé a tiempo y se me pasó justo ayer. Pero resaltar el pin #501 tampoco está mal porque sigue siendo un número interesante, ¿qué les parece? Pensar en todos los lugares lindos en los que estuve para poder tener esta cantidad de pines en mi mapa me hace sentir muy bien. Y como no podía ser de otra forma, este pin es otro lugar genial que quiero compartir con ustedes. Se trata del Glaciar Martial en Ushuaia, un nombre un poco engañoso para los turistas pero bien apreciado por cualquier amante de la montaña 😃.
Being once again at the ‘end of the world’ had me very excited and when I arrived I was almost desperate to go and see some snow. We don't have any of this in Buenos Aires, and despite all the trips I've made, seeing snow is always something I enjoy. For that, the classic and nearby trip that can be made in the city of Ushuaia, province of Tierra del Fuego, is to visit the Martial Glacier. This place can be reached by car or on foot, but guess how I went 😃.
Estar una vez más en el "fin del mundo" me tenía muy emocionada y cuando llegué estaba casi desesperada por ir a ver un poco de nieve. Nosotros en Buenos Aires no tenemos nada de esto, y a pesar de todos los viajes que hice, ver nieve siempre es algo que me gusta. Para eso, el paseo clásico y cercano que puede hacerse en la ciudad de Ushuaia, provincia de Tierra del Fuego, es ir a visitar el Glaciar Martial. A este lugar se puede llegar en auto o caminando, pero adivinen cómo fui yo 😃.
At the side of the vehicle route there is a path in the forest that allows you to reach the base of the mountain on foot. From the hostel where I'm staying, it's about 3 km to the base of the mountain, from where the climb that everyone else does starts. I had no intention of getting there quickly, so I took my time to walk around and reconnect with these mountains that I love. On the way, the path takes you sometimes to cross the road, where you can see several hotels and lodges on the way to this glacier 😃.
Al costado de la ruta para vehículos se encuentra un sendero en el bosque que te permite llegar hasta la base de la montaña a pie. Desde el hostel en el que estoy, son unos 3 km hasta ahí, desde donde empieza la subida que hace todo el mundo. No tenía ninguna intención de llegar rápido, así que me tomé mi tiempo para ir paseando y reconectar con estas montañas que me encantan. En el camino, el sendero te lleva algunas veces a cruzar la ruta vehicular, en donde se pueden ver varios hoteles y hospedajes que hay camino a este glaciar 😃.
At the base of this mountain is an abandoned chairlift complex, but it still has some remains of what it used to be. When I visited Ushuaia in December 2023 it was still abandoned, as it was at the time of this walk in October 2024, so entry was free. Now, March 2025, the complex has been taken over by a private company that is ‘supposed’ to repair it. As the complex now has an owner, tourists are charged an entrance fee of $10 to enter the mountain, Argentine residents $5 and a free pass for those living in Tierra del Fuego. Would you pay to see a mountain 🙃?
En la base de esta montaña se encuentra un complejo de aerosillas abandonado pero que igualmente tiene algunos restos de lo que solía ser. Cuando visité Ushuaia en diciembre 2023 seguía abandonado, al igual que al momento de este paseo en octubre 2024, por lo que la entrada era libre. Actualmente, marzo 2025, el complejo fue adquirido por una empresa privada que "se supone" que se encargará de repararlo. Como ahora el complejo tiene dueño, solo por pasar a la montaña se les cobra a los turistas una entrada de $10, a residentes argentinos $5 y pase gratis para quienes residan en Tierra del Fuego. ¿Pagarían por pasar a ver una montaña 🙃?
This mountain was designed in the form of a ski resort, so the ascent to it can be made either by a wide piste or by a path at the edge of the forest. In October, the whole of this climb was snowy and frozen, something I had not expected and so I had not brought crampons. It was a bit difficult to climb without slipping, but with slow steps and avoiding the snow as much as possible, I was able to do it. This climb takes about 40 minutes on foot and at the other end you can see what used to be the lift house. A small ski resort, but with the advantage of being very close to town 😃.
Esta montaña estaba diseñada en forma de complejo de ski, por lo que la subida hacia ella se puede hacer por una ancha pista o por un sendero al costado del bosque. En octubre, toda esta subida estaba nevada y congelada, algo que yo no esperaba y por eso no había llevado crampones. Fue un poco difícil subir sin resbalarse, pero con paso lento y evitando la nieve lo más posible, pude hacerlo. Esta subida toma unos 40 minutos a pie y en el otro extremo puede verse lo que era la casa receptora de la aerosilla. Un complejo de ski pequeño, pero con la ventaja de estar muy cerca de la ciudad 😃.
Once in this area, you can continue climbing a little more towards the so-called ‘Filo Trail’, but as I already did it on my first visit, I did not repeat it this time. When you come to this place called ‘Martial Glacier’, you expect to see a glacier, as the name suggests. However, the real glacier is so high up the mountain that it is impossible to see it, even as close as at the end of this hike. On the other hand, when you are down in the city, the glacier is visible from there if you look up the mountain. So you go to the 'Martial Glacier' and you don't see any glacier because what you are really doing is just walking on Martial Mountain: there is always someone who comes back disappointed 😂.
Una vez en esta zona, se puede seguir subiendo un poco más hacia el llamado "Sendero del Filo", pero como yo ya lo hice en mi primera visita, esta vez no lo repetí. Cuando uno viene a este lugar llamado "Glaciar Martial", espera ver un glaciar, como su nombre lo indica. Sin embargo, el glaciar real está tan arriba en la montaña que es imposible verlo, incluso estando tan cerca como al final de esta caminata. Por el contrario, cuando uno está abajo en la ciudad, el glaciar si se deja ver desde allí si uno mira hacia la montaña. Entonces uno va al "Glaciar Martial" y no ve ningún glaciar porque en realidad lo que está haciendo es solo caminar en el Cerro Martial: nunca falta el que vuelve decepcionado 😂.
Anyway, this place is so beautiful that, whether you see a glacier or not, you enjoy it all the same. I took advantage of my first day in the snow to have a relaxing afternoon: I looked for a remote place without so many people and stayed there for a while, reading until the Antarctic cold reminded me that I was in Ushuaia and I had to go back. I was very happy to return to this place and to be able to see much more snow than the last time. And I'm also happy for this pin #501 on the Worldmappin map: I assure you that there will be many more to come 😃.
De todos modos, este lugar es tan hermoso que, viendo un glaciar o no, se disfruta igual. Aproveché mi primer día en la nieve para tener una tarde relajada: busqué un lugar alejado sin tantas personas y me quedé un buen rato ahí, leyendo hasta que el frío antártico me recordó que estaba en Ushuaia y tuve que volver. Me hizo muy feliz volver a este lugar y poder ver mucha más nieve que la última vez. Y también me alegra por este pin #501 en el mapa de Worldmappin: les aseguro que van a seguir siendo muchos más 😃.
