Card Highlights #36: Brighton Bloom

Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It is all part of the fairy tale.

There are units and summoners in the game that you don't use regularly but you keep them around to do their specific job in specific situations. I call these situational summoners or situational units. Brighton Bloom is a really good example of this. While you can use him as your main summoner, you really don't because there's always someone better than him, except for that one rule set, Earthquake.
Lore
Brighton was an eccentric young man of Shimmer City, the capital of Khymeria. He was always seen as a strange character among the Khymian summoners. In the best times, his peers thought he was simply a distraction from their important studies. In the worst times, his fellow summoners doubted and belittled Brighton's abilities. They were also put off by the way birds always landed on his hands and shoulders. After just two years studying at the Shimmer summoning school, Brighton decided to leave Khymeria. His loyalty was available to the highest bidder, and that is where the Dragons came in.
The Gloridax cared not for Brighton's strange idiosyncrasies; what mattered to them was his skills as a summoner. Furthermore, in Gloridax eyes oneness with birds has long been considered a sign of divinity. Brighton's attraction to birds was quickly noticed by Suam Khepri, Empress of the United Gloridax, who assigned a team of aerial sorcerers to properly train the young man. When Brighton emerged from that training, he could grant the power of flight to any monster under his summoning control.

Card Effects
Flying |
Flying's main purpose is to negate the damage from Earthquake. But that's not all it does. It also increases the chance of your enemies missing their attacks. This interaction, though, does not affect magic attacks.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Brighton Bloom's strength is that it can give the Flying ability to all of your units saving all of them from the Earthquake rule set. |
Flying loses its effect on a lot of abilities and rule sets. Ensnare can remove a unit's Flying altogether. Aim True rule set allows all units to hit every attacks negating the dodge effect of Flying. There are more rule sets and abilities that can remove or reduce the effectiveness of Flying but you just have to find it for yourself. |
When To Use
Earthquake |
The main purpose of Flying. Earthquake rule set damage is negated if your units have Flying ability and Brighton Bloom grants that to all of your units.
Up Close & Personal |
Since everyone can only use melee units, then they
Lost Magic |
Since there's no magic attacks, then there's high chance of Flying being useful as it will make your enemies miss a lot.
When Not To Use
Aim True |
Like I mentioned, since everyone can hit you,
Wands Out |
Since everyone is using magic attacks that cannot miss, there's no reason to use Brighton Bloom.
Target Practice |
For this rule set, it's not that you cannot use Brighton Bloom but since your enemies might be using magic attacks more frequent which does not miss making the dodge part of Flying useless.

I had clear advantage in this battle starting round 3. While my enemy gets protected from the Earthquake damage for the first 2 rounds via armor from Kelya Frendul and Venari Wavesmith, after that, his units gets damage every round without the armor killing them slowly but surely. I don't take any of that damage since all of my units have Flying ability that negates any Earthquake damage.
Final Thoughts
Brighton Bloom is a very interesting card. It's both strong and weak at the same time. It doesn't do a lot of flashy plays but when used at the right moment, he's one of the strongest summoners in the game.
Given that he's a dragon summoner, he also has natural affinity with all elements making your choice very flexible. Do not be tempted by this and make him a regular summoner as he has more weakness than strengths.
I like Brighton Bloom but only when in Earthquake rule set. I've tried him in other battles and it's better to have other summoners. But in the Earthquake rule set, Brighton Bloom is the best in the game and cannot be replaced as of this moment, if you're playing in Wild Ranked Format.
