It's called justification. Trying to correct past deeds by entering in other factors can dilute the facts or, as we say, muddy the waters. The truth is there, no matter how one attempts to twist ti to their own satisfaction. I share with you a microfiction for the prompt "dilute the lies". The story is a ZAPFIC50 told in exactly 50 words. The challenge was created by @felt.buzz.

Below is my story.
"Dilute the lies, you scum," Detective Lowery's knuckles reddened. "You stalked and murdered her."
"I didn't kill that woman.."
Months of searching uncovered nothing.
Five suspects eventually moved away.
Pressure mounted from his superiors and her family.
Obsessed, "Diluting the lies is useless. The truth remains," became his mantra.
