In the past, when spirituality had a meaning and, of course, a foundation, affecting not only daily life, but also the customs of men, labyrinths not only had an eminently didactic and deeply psychological function, which, in addition , marked the idiosyncrasy of numerous temples strategically located on the main pilgrimage routes -remember, as a monumental example, the surprising labyrinth located in the main nave of Chartres Cathedral- but also formed part of those palatial games, to which so many Fans were the sovereigns and the nobility, through whose intricate paths, a whole world of passions was released, where the salt of courtship and its gallant preliminaries prevailed, metaphorically and comparatively speaking.

It was something that the great master architects and before them, the anonymous stonemasons who built not only the great temples, but also the beautiful cloisters of the monasteries, carried so implicitly, that it could be said, without exaggeration, that there was no royal palace. that it did not have, in its flowery gardens, one or several labyrinths that amortized the tedium of the Court, with the promise of fiery meetings as a climax to its lavish parties. This detail, of course, was known to the great Italian master, Sabatini, who, in addition to finishing designing the Royal Palace of Madrid, also built the splendid adjoining gardens -which, by the way, bear his name- endowing them, of course it could be otherwise, of marvelous labyrinths that still, after centuries, recall other times of charismatic flavor.

Antiguamente, cuando la espiritualidad tenía un sentido y por supuesto, fundamento, afectando, no sólo a la vida cotidiana, sino también, a las costumbres de los hombres, los laberintos, no sólo tenían una función eminentemente didáctica y profundamente psicológica, que, además, marcaba la idiosincrasia de numerosos templos estratégicamente situados en las principales rutas de peregrinación -recordemos, como ejemplo monumental, el sorprendente laberinto situado en la nave principal de la catedral de Chartres- sino que también formaban parte de esos juegos palaciegos, a los que tan aficionados eran los soberanos y la nobleza, mediante cuyos intrincados caminos, se liberaba todo un mundo de pasiones, donde primaba, metafórica y comparativamente hablando, la sal del cortejo y sus galantes preliminares.

Era algo que llevaban tan implícito los grandes maestros arquitectos y antes que ellos, los anónimos canteros que levantaron, no sólo los grandes templos, sino también los hermosos claustros de los monasterios, que podría decirse, sin pecar de exageración, que no había palacio real que no contara, en sus floridos jardines, con uno o varios laberintos que amortizaban los tedios de la Corte, con la promesa de encendidos encuentros como colofón a sus fastuosas fiestas. Detalle, que, por supuesto, conocía el gran maestro italiano, Sabatini, que, además de terminar de diseñar el Palacio Real de Madrid, levantó, también, los espléndidos jardines anexos -que, por cierto, llevan su nombre- dotándolos, como no podía ser de otra manera, de unos maravillosos laberintos que todavía, al cabo de los siglos, recuerdan otras épocas de carismático sabor.
