It is hard to believe that, in what was once just a mirage of a city that the tenacious kings of the first Asturian monarchies dreamed of, is today an example of monumental urbanity, which, looking without complexes towards the future, preserves, not However, with pride, a good part of its ancient and charismatic history, which revolves, as it could not be otherwise, around its fascinating pre-Romanesque architecture and a cathedral, that of San Salvador, where the first pilgrims came to pay homage, echoing that saying, which says: 'Whoever goes to Santiago and not to the Savior, visits the servant, but forgets the Lord.'

Nearly two millennia after King Ramiro I ordered it to be built as a palace of rest and later it was converted into a church, after the partial collapse of the neighboring monastery of San Miguel de Lillo, this surprising construction, which is Santa María de Naranco, continues watching time go by, unchanged by the vision of a history of growth and resilience that characterizes a people, like the Asturian people, always attached to a land and a natural environment, which, not in vain, continues to conserve, deservedly, the Natural Paradise rating.

Cuesta creer, que, en lo que en tiempos fue apenas un espejismo de ciudad con la que soñaran los tenaces reyes de las primeras monarquías asturianas, sea hoy todo un ejemplo de monumental urbanidad, que, mirando sin complejos hacia el futuro, conserva, no obstante, con orgullo, buena parte de su antigua y carismática historia, la cual gira, como no podía ser de otra manera, alrededor de su fascinante arquitectura prerrománica y una catedral, la de San Salvador, donde acudían a rendir pleitesía los primeros peregrinos, haciéndose cumplido eco del dicho aquel, que dice: ‘quien va a Santiago y no al Salvador, visita al siervo, pero olvida al Señor’.

Cerca de dos milenios después de que el rey Ramiro I la mandara levantar como palacio de descanso y posteriormente fuera reconvertida en iglesia, tras el hundimiento parcial del vecino monasterio de San Miguel de Lillo, esta sorprendente construcción, que es Santa María de Naranco, continúa viendo el tiempo pasar, inmutable a la visión de una historia de crecimiento y resiliencia que caracteriza a un pueblo, como el asturiano, siempre apegado a una tierra y a un entorno natural, que, no en vano, continúa conservando, con todo merecimiento, la calificación de Paraíso Natural.
