Ever tasted Catfish Pepper Soup?

If there is one food my friend, Dorcas is good at preparing, it's Catfish pepper soup. I love accompanying her to the market and watching her bargain the price of the fish. It's usually funny but somehow some of those traits are beginning to rub off of me. For today, #marketfriday, I'll share the photos of the catfish she usually buys.

She buys from a particular person and although he knows she patronizes him always, he still doesn't reduce the price for her. She always had to be in a price battle with him. They drag back and forth. He tries to convince her that he isn't gaining much profit from the sales. While she keeps reminding him she frequents his outlet more, so he should favor her. I usually laugh when I hear the last part because I know that most people do not do things for others unless their self-interest is in focus. Therefore, the fact that Dorcas frequents his store isn't a good arguing point. He wouldn't budge no matter what she says.

Whenever she buys the fish and isn't satisfied with the price, I usually wonder why she keeps going to his outlet. Maybe, I should ask her next time. She probably doesn't know anywhere else, or maybe she just likes this particular man.....Or maybe, she is confident she will be getting the best catfish regardless of the price. I think I'll go with the last point.

After purchase, you would find kids lingering around ready to cut the fish for you. They charge about $0.2-$0.5 to help you run this errand, depending on how hard you can plead, and the quantity of your catfish. There are days that Dorcas runs out of funds for this, and she always asks the outlet's owner to plead on her behalf. This means, at times, she doesn't pay to have the fish cut, the man does (from the money she paid for the fish).

When they are done cutting, they get it packaged and hand it over to the owner. Off you go, to prepare it for your friends and family. Dorcas prepares this fish for the customers in her workplace. However, since she moved jobs, she has been preparing it for us and her fiancee as treats.

Catfish is also known as "Point and Kil", you can either prepare it as pepper soup or roasted. Here is what the roasted one looks like. 👇👇

It's called "point and kill" because all you have to do is point the one you want, and they will have it killed in your presence, the way I told you the boys do for my friend.
