I’ve been feeling angry and terrified about the escalation of the war in Ukraine and other wars being waged around the world. I’ve been outraged at the treatment of migrants and marginalized peoples and I wanted to make some art as that always helps me move energy and leverage my skills to build awareness.
This new 2-color screenprint poster was inspired by the 1966 anti-war poster by Lorraine Schneider. It is a poster that remains etched in my imagination since I first saw it when I was 19 years old and just starting out as an artist. I was doing an internship at the @politicalgraphics in Los Angeles and first saw the poster by Lorraine Schneider. I loved the message because the reality is that war is devastating and toxic for humans, animals, and for the earth itself.
And 56 years later, I am recreating this poster. Instead of the words “War is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things,” I am using the words “War is Not Healthy for HUMANS and Other Living Things.” Because war impacts ALL humans, not just children, we should be moved to help out our fellow humans regardless of their age. This poster is available, visit my first link in bio. I will donate some proceeds to organizations supporting migrants and queer folks attempting to leave Ukraine.
Much of my art career I’ve spent creating anti-war posters. The first poster I ever did for mass distribution was done after September 11, 2001, when Bush went to war against Afghanistan and Iraq.
It’s upsetting that I will likely be creating anti-war posters for most of my life. In Russia today, simply holding a sign that says “No War!” can get you 15 years in prison. Art is powerful. I would hope that one day I did not have to make art about war, and could instead use my energy to make art about the peaceful future that we all deserve. This is a limited edition print of 50.
