The Challenge of CHOOSING When You Have an Ocean of Options!

Some people have their lives all figured out... and they had a clear picture of everything even when they were teenagers, or maybe college students.

The pick some area of specialization that appeals to them and just spend their lives dedicated to becoming the very best at that specific thing.

I don't happen to be one of those people.

I never was.

When I was at University, I incessantly changed majors: Architecture, Psychology, English, Finance, Marketing... and the fact that I have a degree in Finance is actually quite arbitrary, rather than planned.

According to some, I am what some would call a "Polymath."

But when we scratch beneath the surface it;s not really a case of my knowing a lot of different things, but that so many things are interesting that simply picking one and committing to it has always been a huge challenge.

At The Same Time...

... No single one thing I have encountered has been so all-absorbingly amazing that I was filled with the sense of "THIS is what I want to do for the rest of my life."

Of course, I expect lots of people in the world never actually experience such a feeling, and content themselves with an outcome that might be described as "decent."

Regardless, my "choices" for much of my life has been to pursue multiple things, rather than one single thing. Hence, @cosmictriage and I live a (work) life we loosely describe as "patchwork economics, because neither of us are particularly good at choosing that one single thing and forsaking all others.

Scattered Successes...

The world we live in is generally not very accommodating of this sort of "generalist." We are not "supposed to" want to just dabble in a bunch of different things.

And goodness knows, I have dabbled a lot!

Even as a self-employed person, most of the businesses I have attempted have been fairly short lived... although not always through any fault of my own, aside from discovering that the only way to become "successful" would be through applying myself 110%, 110% of the time.

These days, blogging on Hive is just one of many different writing endeavors I have going, and even writing is just one thing I work at, out of many.

The thing about this life we are living is that there are so many things that are fascinating!

And what I ultimately have to admit is that I am not really the most practical person on the planet, at least not in the sense of focusing on providing the basics rather than just trying to satisfy my seemingly endless curiosity.

And, perhaps, that's where we start to approach a semblance of an answer to the question of why some people are successful and some — who may be equally or even better qualified — never really make much of themselves.

I can't help by smile wryly to myself at the realization that having been a steady blogger here on Hive for 5 1/2 years and counting represents pretty much the longest I have maintained interest in a single thing! I must really like writing...!

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of the week!
