in Greek mythology, Persephone is the queen of the underworld. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the goddess of the harvest.
When she was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the underworld and the death, her mother caused a drought and all plants on earth died.
Zeus then decided to intervene and demanded Hades to release Persephone, but she had eaten pomegranate seeds from the underworld (it is known in greek and chinese mythology that if you eat something from the world of the dead, then your body must stay there forever), so the result was that she had to stay half of the year there, and she was able to stay half of the year on the land of the living, and this is the origin of the seasons, and the life and dead cycle of vegetation in winter and spring.
