Monomad Challenge: Discovering the Beauty of City Hall’s Landmarks

Last weekend, I went to the City Hall area for a leisurely walk and to explore the places there. Initially, I planned to visit The Arts House at the Old Parliament to check out the art exhibit they currently had on display. However, I discovered that the exhibit had been taken down a week earlier, leaving no displays for me to see. This was disappointing, as I had arrived early specifically to have more time to learn about and fully appreciate the exhibit; but there was nothing left for me to explore.

Adding to my frustration, it started raining just as I reached the building. I ended up stuck under the porte cochère, waiting for the rain to stop or at least ease up. I hated the feeling of being unproductive during that time. However, instead of dwelling on my frustration, I decided to make the most of the situation and turn it into something productive.

I began taking photos of my surroundings as a creative outlet while waiting for the rain to subside. I realized I could still do something worthwhile while waiting, especially since these beautiful classical buildings surrounded me. All I needed to do was find interesting angles to capture the buildings and their surroundings, which turned out to be an enjoyable and rewarding activity.

Across from it is the Victoria Theatre, one of the oldest landmarks in the city. Built in 1862, it is now used for performing arts presentations. Its design is similar to that of The Arts House, featuring neo-classical architecture. This style is one I love photographing because of its intricate details and beautifully simple ornaments.

You may have noticed in some of the photos that these classical buildings are surrounded by tall modern structures. This contrast makes them even more appealing, as their unique designs stand out amidst the contemporary skyline. It’s truly amazing how these buildings have been so well-preserved and are still in use today.

Exploring the City Hall area reminded me of the beauty and significance of preserving historical landmarks amidst a modernizing world. These classical buildings not only add charm to the city but also serve as a testament to its rich heritage. I’m glad I was able to capture their timeless elegance and share the experience through my lens.
