#AMAZINGNATURE CONTEST BY @ADALGER : I WANT AN ANT-EATER FOR MY ANT PLAGUE
6 comments
I am opting for a new house pet!
Yes, this cutie preferably! We have an ant farm in front and next to the house, I tried everything but I am a mass ant murderer by now. So maybe an anteater in the house is the best solution.
And we have one in Diergaarde Blijdorp the Big Rotterdam Zoo.
What the story and we have big ones and little ones all black that they have in common, and they are with many many many. Ants begin to fly when their mating season arrives. Then some of the ants from the colony are born with temporary wings. They need those wings to reproduce, because couples like to do it in the air. Flying ants are also the only ones in the colony that are fertile. Outside the mating season, especially workers hatch from the eggs. These are female ants that care for the larvae and maintain the nest. They do not produce offspring.

Flying ants fly out simultaneously and thats why we all have such a hard time dealing with them, its like a black cloud you see in teh air. The crown princesses of the colony - young females who found a new colony as queen - are the first to spread their wings. They are looking for a suitable time for this: preferably a warm and busy summer day. The females give the starting signal that the reproductive ritual has started. The males follow immediately, and fly after her in the hope of making their contribution to the new colony. That is why all of the ants suddenly fly out of the nest overnight. This is also known as the wedding flight. Ok, i forgot to do that when I got married. The male is no more than a seed donor
Usually they cover distances of a few meters. But if they are carried along with a strong gust of wind, they can also end up hundreds of meters away. This allows ants from different nests to come into contact with each other. This is beneficial, because for the genetic variation it is better if the females mate with strange ants, rather than with their own brothers. Well in real life thats better aswell. All ants from a colony are the direct offspring of the Queen. So literally one big family.

After the deed, the male's work is over. He drops dead, while the female descends to found a new colony on the ground. During that one turn, the queen collected enough seed to fertilize eggs for the rest of her life. She stores the seed in a seed chamber, and every now and then she opens the 'door'. She no longer needs her wings, so they automatically fall off. Ahhhh lady with wings is now normal again. Unfortunately, for most flying ants, the bridal flight is not as smooth. Because they have to do with a set of temporary wings, they fly around like a bunch of chunk pilots. Everywhere you see the animals crash. They drown in your drink, or fly into your eye and nose. In addition, flying ants are massively slaughtered by birds. Fortunately, they fly into the sky with millions at a time, so there will always be a few copies. Thats what I see.
For now the tiles and pieces of the grass we have in the garden get ruiend by the mass ants, so for now I will continue to put sand between the tiles and make sure that they will do no harm to the patio, but I really do not like the feeling the give me.
So I am opting for a new house-pet : the anteater, and I hope he will stay just for fun after the bridal flight and can make sure they don’t ruin my garden any further!
