This is my entry for the monomad challenge.
My day started with the wrong footing; or should I say with slippery hands. I dropped my favorite mug on the kitchen counter and it shattered. Needless to say I wasn't happy about it. But here was no time grief about it since I had to get to music classes. So, I grabbed another mug, got my coffee and breakfast and then before I could catch wind of the problem again, I was off.
However, the mood of the day was sad and clouds didn't make it easier. It was a gift and it was broken now. Well, grief wasn't going to solve anything. So, I went onto the idea of repairing it. It won't get any coffee now, but it will for sure stand as the precious gift it it.
Besides, it will let me exercise one of the most interesting concepts of Japanese culture, wabi sabi. There's perfection in the imperfect things. That's one of the ideas behind the art of fixing things and adorning the cracks. That one is called kintsugi. And even when it is done with gold dust and lacquer to fix the bowl or cups, I went with the things I had at hand to perform this ritual of making my mug into something else and showing the places were it broke.
It was an interesting experience. It's like healing through art. Even when the materials weren't the most artistic ones. But making due with what we have is part of the concept of wabi sabi.

Mi día de ayer no comenzó de la mejor manera. Con estas manos resbaladizas, tiré mi taza favorita sobre el mesón de la cocina y se rompió. No me sentía muy feliz al respecto. Pero tampoco tenía tiempo para hacer algo sobre eso ni sentirme triste porque me estaba alistando para mis clases de música. Así que tomé otra taza. Me serví café. Tuve mi desayuno. Antes de darme cuenta, ya estaba en camino a las clases.
Sin embargo, estuve con eso en la mente todo el día. El clima tampoco me ayudaba. Esa taza fue un regalo y ahora estaba rota. Bueno, lamentarme por el hecho no iba a lograr nada. Así que decidí repararla. Ya no servirá para el café, pero tendría su forma otra vez.
Además, esto me permitiría poner en práctica uno de los conceptos más interesantes de la cultura japonesa: el wabi sabi. Esto se refiere a que la perfección está en las imperfecciones. Una de sus formas más tangiles es a través del arte de reparar cerámica y acentuar las grietas en las piezas. Ese arte se conoce como kintsugi. Aunque se hace con laca y polvo de oro, cosas que no tengo, me dispuse a hacerlo con los materiales a mi disposición. Así que lo tomé como un ritual de reparación, no solo de mi taza sino también de mi humor.
Fue una experiencia interesante. Es casi como una terapia a través del arte. Aunque los materiales no eran los tradicionales, completar la tarea de esta manera le da una dimensión diferente al trabajo. Una manera de hacer tangible el concepto de wabi sabi.
