The Book of Tobit is a book that tells the story of Tobit and his son Tobias, Israelites deported to Nineveh, who, faced with a series of adversities, managed to emerge victorious with the help of the divine providence, personified in the angel Raphael.
The story of Tobit is a reminder of the importance of insistent prayer; and the trust, which is born from the fear of God, in that providence that does not disappoint.
It is interesting to note within the book how Tobit's personality develops throughout the story. Tobit, who lived in Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, put his life in danger by doing works of mercy (compassion, kindness); and in the face of difficulties, he never gave up in the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion).
Then and before sending his son on a long journey in search of money, Tobit gave his son a series of advice that is a reminiscence of the teachings of the sapiential books, with which Tobit instructed his son in that wisdom that frees the men of death and the dangers of life.
Finally, the story of Tobit and his son Tobias ends happily, with Tobit's healing and his son's return home. But before Tobit died he gave a prophecy to his son, a prophecy that is essentially the summary of the eschatological hope, about the triumph of good over evil, a prophecy that even has similarities with the Christian Book of Revelations.
Tobit's prophecy reminds men that despite the evils that afflict the world God has a providential plan, and that in the end, the Kingdom of God will prevail over oppression, lies, and deception. With these words Tobit prophesied not the end of the world but the end of the times:
"All the nations of the world will turn and reverence God in truth; all will cast away their idols, which have deceitfully led them into error.
They will bless the God of the ages in righteousness. All the Israelites truly mindful of God, who are to be saved in those days, will be gathered together and will come to Jerusalem; in security will they dwell forever in the land of Abraham, which will be given to them. Those who love God sincerely will rejoice, but those who commit sin and wickedness will disappear completely from the land" Tobit 14:6-7.
